Keva Juice Drinking, Enchilada Eating, Bone Breaking Thursday

Keva Juice Drinking...
Since I had the day off of work at Google and am in Las Cruces, I decided to go to work at my other job with YWiC. Why am I working on my day off? Well, it's fun and I had missed my YWiC girls. Before I left to Google for my internship, we had a weekly tradition of going to Keva Juice on Fridays! We love it so much that we even blogged a little bit about it. Check it out HERE Since I wasn't sure it I was going to go in to work on Friday, we (Jen, Janie, Nicole, Michael, and I) all went to Keva Juice! :)
We <3 Keva Juice!
Cute!
In the summer of 2009, I had jaw surgery and couldn't eat anything solid for 6 weeks. I pretty much had to live off of Keva Juice! I ended up trying all of the flavors. lol Today I was in the mood for the Gimme Guava smoothie. It is made with guava juice, pineapple sherbet, peaches, and strawberries! MMMM!
Haha I love Jen's expression!
Enchilada Eating...
How could we go straight back to work, when some authentic Mexican food was calling our names? After Keva Juice we made our way to Andele Restaurant. If I told you that they make the best green chile enchiladas, could you guess what I ordered?
We love Mexican food!
Nicole and I ordered the green chile enchiladas, Janie ordered a torta, Jen ordered posole, and I think Michael ordered either tacos, a chile relleno, or something else - I can't quite remember. lol Either way, it was all good!
Enjoying the Andele atmosphere
Bone Breaking...
Now that our tummies were content, we went back to work. YWiC was hosting another camp starting on Friday, so there was still a little bit to do for that. I had to finish up some final information for the Grace Hopper Student Poster submission, and I also needed to fill out the form to formally accept becoming the 2012-2013 Google Student Ambassador at NMSU. Enough work... It was time for a break. Since I've been at Google Nicole, Janie, and Jen have migrated from spending their breaks throwing the frisbee around to long boarding. How adventurous! I went outside with them and first got on Janie's longboard. It wasn't hard, and I went pretty far. Then I gave Janie her board back and gave Jen's a try. I wasn't on it for very long...

Next thing I knew, I was on the floor laying on my back and clenching my left knee to my chest. Right away I knew that my ankle was broken. "Help me! Help me!" I shouted to the girls, and Nicole was the first to get to me, followed by Jen and Janie. I was SOL (sorry outta luck) at this point. Nicole ran back to the office to get her car keys so they could take me to the emergency room, while Janie went to go find my phone so I could call my mom.  Jen stayed with me, helping to hold my leg elevated, and called my mom. She said that they should take my to an urgent care clinic instead of the hospital... Janie came back and said that she couldn't find my phone. Instead of thinking about my leg all I could think about was where my phone was. I had left it by a tree, and didn't want to leave it behind - I didn't want to give my mom 2 reasons to be mad at me. lol

I started to feel the pain. My breaths started to become shorter, almost to the point of hyperventilation. So not fun. Luckily Jen was able to keep me somewhat calm. Nicole parked her car really close to where I was laying on the floor, and then her and Jen carried me to the car. I had to pull myself in the backseat, laying down, and rested my head on Jen's lap, with my foot dangling in the air. Nicole drove and Janie sat in the front seat. Nicole drives a car with a standard transmission, so the ride was a little bumpy, but she assured me that it was the smoothest car ride she has ever given. I thought it was hilarious, because on the way, "Call Me Maybe" came on the radio. Thanks Nicole for getting us there! When we got there, we had to wait in the waiting room for my mom to come with the insurance card. She got there pretty quickly considering she works about 40 minutes away.

They finally called me back into a room. Then a nurse person came in and told me that I needed to take X-rays. That hurt so much! They took 3 pictures at different angles. A photo from the top (that was the easiest), a photo from the inside and the outside of my ankle. Agony. Sure enough, I had broken my ankle in 3 places. NOT COOL!

At this point, the doctor told us that I was going to need surgery. Just great... He tried to get a hold of some orthopedic surgeons that would be able to do the surgery right away, but he had no luck. Many of the surgeons refused to take his call (probably because they were on vacation). So his only solution was to splint up my leg and send me to the emergency room hoping that the surgeon on-call would be available for surgery. They still had not given me any time of medication for the pain, so I wasn't a very happy camper. Finally, after my mom requested it, they gave me a shot in each arm for the pain. Well it was time for the splint...
I was having tons of fun...
They wheeled me out to Janie's car, and we went to the emergency room. By this time my whole family knew what had happened and I was getting lots of phone calls...
There was no telling if I was gonna get surgery that night or not. The hospital wanted to take more X-rays before I was seen by the doctor. They took photos from the same positions, and those were also painful! I think some of the shock was starting to wear off. After the X-rays, I could finally have some medication. But first, they had to start an IV. I HATE NEEDLES, so I was freaking out! I was impressed, because the guy who started the IV got it on the first try. Nobody else has ever done that before... Once the IV was ready, they gave me some Morphine. I was a bit happier now. lol Jen even has a video of me rapping after I had the Morphine! haha
Post Morphine - I was actually smiling haha
The doctor came in and said that the Orthopedic surgeon would not do the surgery today. Instead, I had to make an appointment for Monday morning, and the time/day for surgery would be scheduled then. Since I wasn't going to have the surgery that night, the doctors sent me home. Luckily, Jen/Janie/somebody made a really good observation about my splint. It was leaking a lot of water. That is not a good sign. The guy who did the IV came in and explained that they were going to have to put in another splint, because it is very dangerous having a splint that is soaking wet. Wet splints can cause a lot of damage to the skin. Good thing they took it off, because there was already starting to be noticeable damage to the heel of my foot.
He put in another splint that was much lighter than the previous one, so I was also happy about that. I was finally able to go home, and I was starving. Jen and Janie came along and sat with me in the living room, and my mom made us some delicious bean burritos! It was already pretty late, so the girls left after we ate. THANKS SO MUCH to Jen and Janie for being there with me the whole night! I crutched myself over to the bedroom, found a somewhat comfortable position with my foot elevated on a couple of pillows, and fell asleep.

It is so unbelievable how quickly things happen and how quickly plans can change. I was only supposed to be in Las Cruces until Sunday, but now all of the doctors and nurses were telling me that I would have to stay for a couple of weeks. Wow. I don't understand why this happened when it did, but I have no choice now, but to take the pain one day at a time. I need to focus on getting better, so that I can return to my internship at Google...
